Medium: mixed-media

Step into the world of traditional Japanese katazome (Japanese stencil dyeing), a paste-resist technique used to create beautifully patterned designs. Participants will learn the full process and begin by designing and carving a repeatable stencil using mylar, then making a resist paste (using defatted rice bran and mochi flour). Using your stencil, you’ll apply the paste before creating your own paints with a soy-based binder and pigments. Once the piece is painted, the resist is washed off to reveal your design. Katazome encourages a thoughtful balance of self-expression and experimentation. The technique is non-toxic, and the stencils can be used over and over in future projects. No prior experience is necessary. All materials are provided.
